New Ideas for the Traditional Basket

Leon Niehues

Intermediate to Advanced

3 Day class (9am-4pm)

Tuition: $165

Materials: $85

This class will revolve around construction of a decorative basket with square base and overlay applied on the surface. Participants will use white oak splint provided by the instructor. Baskets are woven free-form; simple weaving; the rims and overlay are drilled and stitched with linen thread. There will be demonstrations using fresh white oak.

Leon Niehues is a studio basket maker who lives and works in Huntsville, Arkansas. While he uses traditional splint-work techniques, he adds innovative ideas, new construction methods and simple design elements that change his oak baskets into contemporary pieces. Leon has been making baskets for twenty-eight years and has exhibited widely throughout the United States. In 2005 the Arkansas Arts Council and the Department of Arkansas Heritage named him an Arkansas Living Treasure.
