5 Day class (9am-4pm)

Tuition: $275

Materials: $50

Learn how to build unique ceramic forms that make life-like whistling sounds! Based on the pre-Columbian type water whistle, students will learn about ceramic vessels that whistle when filled with water and rocked back and forth. The moving water forces the air through the whistles at an irregular rate to make wonderful life-like sounds. Many of the original pre-Columbian whistles have bird and animal imagery. The tones created by the water-whistles often mimicked the animal cries. The first pieces created will be painted with terra sigillata, kiln fired, and be ready to take home on the last day.

Laurie Spencer (Tulsa, Oklahoma) received her M.A. and B.F.A. in ceramics from the University of Tulsa. Her work has been exhibited internationally and has been featured in several books and magazines. She is best known for her ceramic whistles and large scale ceramic domes which are built and fired onsite.
