Classes - Instruction

Session Seven/July 12 - 16

Brain, Hands and the Arts!

Doug Stowe and Peggy Kjelgaard

5 Day class (9am-4pm)

Tuition: $275

Description: This workshop begins to address the full spectrum of individualizing instruction for all types of learners. It looks at different learner characteristics and other factors that may impact the learning process. Emphasis is made on how the brain processes information and how learners leverage both right and left brain functions. Realistic strategies and ideas to balance instruction are presented, including: 1) learning methodologies for using the hands; 2) visual imagery, 3) auditory stimulation through music and 4) movement activities. This class is for teachers across all subject matter areas, parents, grandparents – anyone interested in learning how to stimulate the learning process in their students, their children and themselves.

Doug Stowe (Eureka Springs) is a teacher, writer, and renowned woodworker. He was the recipient of the 2009 Arkansas Living Treasure award for his outstanding knowledge and skills as a craftsman, furniture designer, and box maker. He has conducted in-depth research regarding how people learn by using their hands and will be sharing his ‘wisdom of the hands' perspectives.

Peggy Kjelgaard (Eureka Springs) taught in the public school systems for 15 years. She worked with students of all ages, kindergarten through college. She received her doctorate degree in Curriculum and Instruction and spent a significant part of her teaching career working with teachers, helping them balance their curriculum to meet the needs of all learners. She has conducted in-depth research on how the right and left brain hemispheres function and has applied this research in her own teachings.
